Meeting God in Solitary Confinement

Blog

By Discover Bible School

Just a couple of years ago I was in the middle of a gang war. There was a lot of bloodshed on both sides. One kid lost his life after being stabbed in the heart. Three individuals were, subsequently, charged with his murder. I myself was stabbed in my face just a few inches shy of my temple. I was rushed to an outside hospital where the doctors had to perform surgery. As I lay there on that operating table, I wasn’t thinking about the pain. My only thought was getting back to the jail and continuing the war.

Living With Guilt

By Discover Bible School

I became a Christian at age eleven. I raised my sons and grandchildren in the Christian church. However, I lost my way through depression after losing five family members to death within six months of each other. My way of coping was to drink—a little at first—then a lot to bury my sadness.

Learning the Hard Way

Okay, so let me back up some. I have been a believer in Christ since I was 16 years old. But, at age 18, my grandfather passed away. I was angry at God and rebelled. I started studying the occult, which led me to the Church of Satan. I started practicing magic and soon was lost in the dark arts. Then I married a woman who was Wiccan.

"Let me tell you a little about myself. My life has been marked by years of alcohol and drug addiction. I’ve been in and out of prison, in and out of treatment facilities, and in and out of relationships. Today, I am a new creature in Christ. This is my third incarceration and it has redefined me in so many ways. Even incarcerated, my life is so very rich and full of joy. I have His peace that guards my heart and a wonderfully intimate relationship with Jesus. It is exciting.

I am a 47-year-old male and I have been a drug addict since age 14. I have been married twice and have three children and four grand children. And, although I am in prison, I know that I have people who love me.

In saying this, I have been in prison most of my life, with this being my eighth time back there. But, for the first time in my life, I've found true love in Jesus.

On Fire for God

My name is David and my story is very long. So, I will give you the short version of how I came to be a Discover Bible School student. My walk with God has been a long and challenging journey. I was baptized as a Catholic, raised a believer, and attended many Christian churches. I did some studies with the Jehovah's Witnesses and also attended a Lutheran church. I was reading the Bible for years as an adult. But, I never dedicated my whole life to Jesus and gave up my worldly ways.

The Answer to Holiday Fatigue

I love Thanksgiving and Christmas, too, don't get me wrong. I enjoy baking pumpkin pies, choosing gifts for our daughters, knitting Shawn his annual pair of socks and decorating the fireplace mantle with sparkling lights and green boughs with red berries. But let's be honest. The holidays are exhausting! Today, I begin my much-needed recouping period.

Pay to Pray

Blog

By Shawn Boonstra

The book of Acts tells the story of a recovering sorcerer by the name of Simon, who, shortly after his baptism, saw people receive the gift of the Holy Spirit when the disciples prayed for them. Accustomed to performing tricks for money, Simon begged the disciples to share their secret. Offering them what one can only assume was a considerable sum of money, he said, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:19)

It would seem that "pay to play" is a very ancient practice indeed.
