A few years ago, Dr. Dick Stenbakken, retired Chaplain Colonel, was a speaker at an event Shawn and I were hosting. I knew a little about Dick and his ministry, and when he asked if our oldest daughter could participate in his presenation, I was happy to ask her. Natalie was delighted to be Jairus' daughter, and Dick brought her a costume and helped her choose a song to sing at the close of his message.

On the Other Half of the Mouse

I found myself trying to imagine what had led to such a horrible fate. Had the mouse been attacked by a neighborhood cat? Maybe. But it seemed very strange to me that the cat would leave half a mouse behind. Perhaps the unlucky rodent had been tragically bisected by the wheel of a passing car or bike. I looked around in vain for the rest of the mouse; it was nowhere to be seen.

As I reflect upon this story, I am reminded of a historical description of a meeting of church leaders following a time of persecution during the Dark Ages. The circle of Christian leaders consisted of men with missing arms or other appendages. Scars were etched on some of their faces or bodies from brutal torture. Each of these men could have escaped the torture and disfigured bodies. All they had to do was to recant just a little—just enough for the council to give them a pass. Or they could have gone off into the hills and found a cave or lonely place in which to hide.

I have dug up the ground behind a number of houses here in North America for various reasons, and I have never found any lingering remnants of antiquity. I didn't expect to find anything, either: such finds are rare in North America and if they are found, they tend to be unearthed on the East Coast where a rather surprising number of Europeans seem to have landed well in advance of Columbus.

On January 30, his church launched a service campaign with an inspired goal: to reach 100,000 people in the city of Baltimore before the end of the year! Listen below to what Pastor David shared with me about this outreach to the challenged parts of his community.
