One More Ride

Blog

By Kurt Johnson

Rick not only loves ball games, but he loves the mountains. In fact, Rick has what I call a topographical map and GPS in his mind. I have never met anyone who can tell you the name of each mountain peak, hill or forest service road in a given region. I asked him one day how he knew so many details. He responded, "All you have to do is buy a map and study it."

A couple months ago, Rick said to me, "Kurt, could you take me up to the lake for a boat ride one more time? One more ride is on my 'bucket list' in case I do not live through next spring."

Be Still and Know

I was reading about George Whitefield and found that he would read his Bible and pray over every line. He felt that it was important not to speed through the Scriptures. Instead, he would take his time allowing God to reveal to him the lesson that He would have him learn pertaining to the passage. Later, George Müller read about Whitefield’s Bible study practices and adopted this method of Bible reading. Both men claimed that they would learn more of the Bible and of God in one sitting than they had in previous months. As I read these accounts, I felt a burning in my soul to follow suit.

He stormed to an unexpected 400-meter gold medal win and took bronze in the 200-meter final. The stage was set for him to become a sporting celebrity, but instead, he chose to become a missionary to China. In 1943, Japanese occupation forces ordered hundreds of American and European “enemy nationals,” including Eric Liddell, to an internment camp in China’s Shantung Province. They had to endure months of boredom, frustration, overcrowding and fear.

Abraham's Near-Horrific Act

The concern is valid. I’ve wrestled with the same question in the past. I’m relieved that God stopped Abraham from committing such a heinous act. However, this does not change the fact that He requested it. It also does not change the fact that Abraham obeyed. What kind of God would ask for a human sacrifice? And what kind of man would willingly lay his son on an altar and raise the knife fully intending to come down with it?

Genocide—People or Numbers?

In April 1994, just 22 years ago (does not seem that long ago, does it?), years of underlying tension broke loose in uncontrolled violence. Ancestral bloodlines—Hutu or Tutsi—were your “ID Card” to live or die. The Hutus turned on the Tutsis and through the use of machetes, guns, and other means, slaughtered almost 1 million people.

The legislation if passed would go into effect in 2018 and would require companies to encourage employees to turn off phones and other devices after they leave work.

Business owner, Nicolas Potier, does not like the idea of disconnecting. "As a business owner, my life is to be connected to my company 24/7." Mr. Potier continues sharing that he is "vigilant" to his employee's quality of life and most are willing to take the time necessary to do the job. He concludes, "it is a state of mind." In essence, just accept the reality of a 24 hour connect with your job.

Love Your Enemies

Well did they know Jeremiah’s predictions that God would one day hand them over to the Babylonians. King Josiah was likely fresh on their minds. Though he cleaned up Jerusalem’s act for a time, God had only agreed to spare Jerusalem during Josiah’s lifetime. Their thoughts must have also stretched back to King Hezekiah. Instead of giving God glory for extending his life 15 years, he showed the Chaldeans all the temporal treasures of his kingdom. As a result, Isaiah delivered God’s sobering message that the Chaldeans would come and take all–including his children.

Take Mark 7:5 for example. The Pharisees and the Scribes questioned Jesus as to why his disciples did not follow the custom of washing before eating bread. In response, Jesus referred to them as “hypocrites,” quoting Isaiah’s statement that they honor the Lord with their lips but their hearts are far from Him. In another instance recorded in Mark 8, Jesus rebuked Peter. "Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." These don’t quite fit in the more gentle side of God paradigm, and yet, if we think about it, they are full of love.

Sweet as Honey–Bees and the Church

During the class, a question was asked about the frequency of bee stings. The instructor said that if we listen to our bees we shouldn’t get stung. Phew! But then she said, “I usually get stung about 5 times per year.” What! Getting stung once in a lifetime is more than enough for me, lol.

All kidding aside, I did learn some fascinating stuff today. I learned that bees have a very intentional and efficient way of life. I also realized there is much Christians can learn from bees. Here are a few lessons:

Enjoy the Ride

Airplanes have always intrigued me. No matter how many times I board a plane from the steps on the ground, I look down the body of the plane and wonder how does it ever get off the ground! I was in the Detroit Airport and wandered into a store featuring items from the local auto and air museum. I purchased a book entitled, “How We Invented the Airplane,” by Orville and Wilbur Wright. The book was compiled from their written testimony during patent trials from others who were attempting to claim they were the “first,” to invent certain aspects of the Wright Flyer.
